What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
It is a psychological reaction that occurs after experiencing [a] highly stressing event (or events, as wartime combat, physical violence, or [a] natural disaster/s) outside the range of normal human experience and that is usually characterized by depression, anxiety, flashbacks, recurrent nightmares, and avoidance of reminders of the event—abbreviation PTSD; called also delayed-stress disorder, delayed-stress syndrome, post-traumatic stress syndrome.
Many factors can contribute to a person suffering PTSD: A single event witnessed and/or suffered, at the hands of another – or during a natural or man-made disaster; a series of violent attacks witnessed and/or suffered, such as abuse from others (in various forms), acts of terrorism – and even schoolyard bullying!
